ASSURE Model Instructional Plan
Title of Lesson or Unit:  SODIUM FAT SUGAR
Teacher Name:  Seth D. Brown
Grade:  8th Math
Subject:  Collecting, Analyzing, and Presenting analysis of Data.
Duration:  3 days
Analyze Learners
1.      28 students
2.      Ages 13-14
3.      Mental, Social, Physical, Social Notes:
Elijah will present after class just to the teacher.
ESL students will be encouraged to submit a draft or to practice speaking their
presentation to the teacher ahead of their graded effort in front of the class. Check
for the quality of their explaining why.
State Objectives
1- SWBAT collect data from informational sources.
2- SWBAT compare categories of data to determine objective value judgments.
3-SWBAT Connect the results of their data back to real world consequences.
4- SWBAT organize data into presentational aids.
5- SWBAT present the results of their data to the class.
Select Media, Materials, and Methods
All media and materials needed for the lesson are listed, and are lesson appropriate.
Utilize Media, Materials, and Methods
The Library PCs are for student research and spreadsheet preparation.
The Library Projector is for the teacher’s short presentations on organizing data on a spreadsheet and
         inserting data into charts.
The Library Projector is for the teacher to display student’s spreadsheet while they present.
Presentational instruction slips are to be given to each student (x28.)
For scoring rubric refer students to Presentation #1 Scoring Rubric
Google drive accounts for access to Google’s Spreadsheet.
Google Drive accounts are for students to submit their spreadsheets to the teacher.
Examples of cereals are needed for any student who does not prepare (3X28)
Blue tape is for the classroom floor in the Introduction.
Require Learner Participation
Pre-DAY1: A week or so before, Inform the students that we will be having a project. They are welcome to use my prepared examples, but they may enjoy the project more by collecting examples from their own life. Explain to them that if they eat cereal at home, they should copy down on paper the name of the cereal, Fat, Sugar, Sodium(salt), and Calorie information from the square on the side of the box (show example.) If they do not eat cereal at home, they can still collect their own example if they go to the supermarket with their parents. They can do this for as many brands as they like, but they should try to get at least 3.

Introduction: 1. Have a distance of 28’ on the floor marked off with blue tape. On the board put “ , 20%, 347 inches”. Underneath them, covered with paper, write “ ________ of the class could lay on the floor head-to-feet between the 2 pieces of tape.”
Ask class which of the 3 numbers are easier to understand. Have them explain their opinions. Then show the problem and ask “With your partner, discuss and decide which number goes best in the blank and write it on your scratch.” (wait)
“Look at your answer and decide how many students your chosen number is  when written in decimal form, rounded to the tenths, and write down that number.” (wait) “Is your number 5.6?” correct any calculation errors as time allows, then explain how and why the same information can be given in different forms. Ask for some of the advantages and disadvantages that all 3 forms had.

DAY 1(79 minutes)
Activity:
Students go to the library to use PCs.
Students log on to their Google drives, open a spread sheet, and have scratch paper for notes.
Students informed that they will be learning to design a spreadsheet to support a presentation.
(Teacher hands out presentation instructions slips and displays the same on projector)

Instructions: 1) Prepare a spreadsheet to support a
                                                                                                         presentation
                                                                                                  2) Research fat, sodium(salt), sugar, and
                                                                                                         calories to understand how they
                                                                                                         impact your health.
                                                                                                  3) Decide which is the most important to
                                                                                                         watch, in your opinion,
                                                                                                         for a healthy diet.
                                                                                     4) Prepare to share your research and opinion
                                                                                                         with the class.
Be sure to explain the health factor you
                                                                                                          selected.
                                                                                                 Be sure to explain why.
Recommend a cereal based on your
                                                                                                          health factor.
                                                                                     5) Give the presentation (2 min).

Students watch the teacher give a short demonstration on the projector screen for setting up categories
of data in columns and rows, and apply the first 5 functions under the functions tab to a
            highlighted selection of data.
Students create their own spreadsheet to display Sodium(salt), Sugar, Fat, and Calories from 3
different brands of cereal. (Teacher provides prepared examples for those students who did
            not prepare themselves.)
(Teacher assists as needed)
Students then watch the teacher give a short demonstration on the projector screen for how to highlight
a selection of data and insert a chart using that data.
Give students time to explore the different looks and styles of charts and to finalize the look of their
spreadsheet for the presentations. If they finish early, they should get a head start on
             researching for their presentation.

Day 2
Activity:
Students go to the Library to use PCs.
Students log on to their Google drives, open their saved spreadsheet, and have scratch paper for notes.
Students research the health factors of Fat, Sodium(salt), Sugar, Calories.
Students decide, in their opinion, which health factor is the most important to watch.
Students prepare a presentation explaining which health factor they feel is important to watch, why,
and which cereal is the best choice based on that health factor.
When ready, students “share” their spreadsheet with the teacher.
If time remains, students may begin their presentations.

Day 3

Activities:
Students go to the Library, and sit facing the projector screen.
(Teacher displays each student’s spreadsheet for them to use in his or her presentation.)
Students present to the class the findings of their research.

Wrap-up
  • Ask the class to discuss the significance of the introduction’s problem to the presentations given. (If needed, guide the conversation towards recognizing that how data is presented makes significant difference in how it is understood by an audience.)
  • Answer questions.
Evaluate & Revise
Student Performance
  • Students will be evaluated on how well they created a spreadsheet and chart to display data for a presentation.
  • Students will be evaluated on how well their presentation explained their opinion on which health factor to watch, explained why, and explained the recommendation they make based on that opinion.
  • Students will be evaluated on how well their spreadsheet supported the recommendation of their presentation.
Media Effectiveness
  • Was Google Drive’s spreadsheet simple enough for them to use without needing a separate lesson in using it?
  • Was research time on the PCs used for research, or was it too distracting to have PC use without directly instructed activities.

  1. Hi:
Take a look at your BLOG. The black font does not have as much contrast as the yellow and white fonts do. Black font is much more difficult to read on a red background; yellow and white are much better.
